This ithmid is known in the Hejaz as “Isfahani” ithmid, due to the presence of antimony near the Persian city of Isfahan.

Islamic context regarding ithmid:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “One of the best kinds of kohl that you use is Ithmid ; it brightens the vision and makes the hair (eye-lashes) grow.”

ibn Hajr (rahimullah) wrote about ithmid:

“…and the best of it is brought from Isfahan.”

There is a dispute about whether the “ithmid” mentioned in the hadith refers to red or grey ithmid but both antimonies have been used for their beneficial health effects for thousands of years, and both are sometimes referred to as “ithmid” by the native people of Mecca and Medina regions.
